Try to keep the customer focused on one specific problem they had and the solution you provided. These specific stories are more compelling to customers than a generic “We like them and had a positive experience.”


Some people think the answer to “What is customer feedback?” is just anything a customer says about a business, but that’s not quite right. The best feedback is grounded, specific, and authentic.

Your role as the person asking for video customer testimonials is simply to guide the customer through the process. Ask the right questions, and a great video will likely follow.


Try these open-ended questions to trigger emotional and descriptive responses from your interviewee.


  • What were you struggling with before finding our business?
  • What was the aha moment that made you finally decide to look for a solution?
  • How did you discover our service?
  • Why did you choose us over our competitors?
  • What was the process like on your end working with us?
  • What specific metric or result that we delivered are you most pleased with?
  • What would you say to someone who is on the fence about hiring us?


Be open to letting the customer cover topics you may not be expecting. It’s better to have more content from the customer as opposed to not enough. When you finalize the video, you can always cut out extra content that’s not as relevant.


Pro Tips for Filming Without a Hollywood Budget


You don't need a huge budget to film high-quality, persuasive customer testimonials. A lo-fi (low fidelity) production can sometimes seem more authentic while also being more cost-effective.


Try to prioritize natural light, like by filming outside or near a large window. More natural light means you won’t need as many artificial lights. You can also just record on your smartphone—you don’t need a fancy professional camera. Most smartphones today have excellent cameras that record high-quality video.


Just don’t try to record without a microphone. The built-in microphone on your phone won’t be enough to record clear audio while filming. Instead, purchase a cheap lapel microphone for the customer to wear while speaking. The microphone will ensure crisp audio that’s easy for shoppers to hear and understand.

Once you have your customer video testimonials, it’s time to put them to work. You need to get the videos in front of customers who are considering your business.


The first place to upload your customer testimonials is to your website. Consider creating a testimonials page where you can highlight the most compelling videos and written reviews to convince customers who are on the fence. You can also add the videos to related service or product pages. Just don’t let the testimonials become the focus there.
